At All Costs Now Available as an eBook—And It's Different. Sort Of.
Dear friends and fans,
This is new territory for me—and, I believe, for my publisher: our first direct-to-eBook offering. While it is a reprint of a book I wrote a long time ago (see more on that below), I'm still very proud of it. It holds up well, I think, even though the cutting edge technology my characters employed then at a bit dull of edge now. I hope you enjoy it, too.
At All Costs first appeared on bookshelves in 1998. It is my second published book, and in some ways it remains my favorite. I wrote it during a magical time in my life, as my head was still swimming with the realization that I had not only achieved my lifetime goal of becoming a professional writer, but that I had done it in a big way with my first novel, Nathan's Run. When the reviews came in for At All Costs and they were positive, I believed for the first time that maybe I really could tell a story.
It's an interesting adventure to re-release a book after so many years. The temptation to tweak and re-write is almost unbearable. For the most part, I resisted—though I did clean up the language a little. Apparently I was more enamored of the F-bomb back then than I am now. Other than those changes and a few minor edits, this text is exactly as it appeared in the original hardcover.
This new iteration of At All Costs began when Michaela Hamilton, super-editor at Kensington Books, told me in a telephone conversation that she would love for me to write a story that told more about Irene Rivers, a pivotal character in my thriller series featuring freelance hostage rescue specialist Jonathan Grave. Irene makes sure the good guys win, even if it means wrinkling a few foreheads. She's what I like to think all public servants strive to be.
When I told Michaela that I'd already written that story, and that it came out over a decade ago in At All Costs, she was thrilled. As luck would have it, the book was out of print and available, so here we are.
If you're interested in giving it a shot, you can find At All Costs on any site where eBooks are available, format notwithstanding. If you're still reading only paper books (I was one of those folks until a year ago), the book will be rereleased in paper in 2012.
Enjoy!
